There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is illegal. Eight gambling halls are established in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is real of most borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that features numerous luxuries on top of the gambling den, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight table games.
