There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is banned. Eight casinos are anchored in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and though visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.

The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling den, contains 150 slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel complex that highlights many conveniences in addition to the casino, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machines and 88 table games.
